Group theory

Aschbacher was among the mathematicians who worked in the Classification of finite simple groups, his contributions being over the period 1970-80. Later, along with Smith, Aschbacher fixed a gap in the proof of the classification for the case of quasithin groups. He is also among the mathematicians who has worked on a second-generation classification proof.
