The promise

Friends! You give me a set, and I shall give you a group. Give me a set. Any set. A set of your creation. A set that is the product of your toil and hardwork.

I will fashion out of that set a group. I will string the elements together, repeating them as often as I need to, turning every element around when necessary, going to great lengths. And I will make of the set a group. A group where anything can be put next to anything. I will make of it, my friends, a free group.

Friends, I make no demands, place no constraints, on the freedoms of your set. There is only one thing I ask -- that you let your set associate freely, rather than staying secluded in protective brackets. I do not ask of any element to commute. All I ask is that each element embrace its neighbour and live in harmony.

This free group, my friends, will have an identity of its own, an identity that needs no words. An identity that expresses itself in every word of the group. An identity that pulls us all together.

Offer to me a set, and I will make you a group. A group of boundless size, a group that shall be the source of all groups. For I promise you, friends, that if anybody else were to fashion out of this same set a group, that group shall be a tame quotient of our group. It shall be something that needlessly kills and constrains. Something that I do not demand of you.

One last word. I promise you a land of freedom and paradise. But you need to fulfil your end of the bargain. And to fulfil that end, you need to give me a set. For if you stinge and give me nothing, then all I can offer you is an identity. I cannot offer you the bounties of freedom if you cannot part with the slightest product of your toil. Ao give freely, my friends, and feel the freedom flow in.

Give me a set. Give me a set, and I shall give you a group.

Short comments

  • It's just words. Random, senseless words.
  • It's always about our end of the bargain. We toil. We produce a set. Then these people come and just take our creations and remix and rehash them to product some long stuff and proudly proclaim freedom. This isn't freedom. It's just nonsense.
  • I think it holds promise. But what I'm really worried about is what happens when you take something, turn it inside out, and then put them next to each other. It sounds like they'll kill each other. Is that freedom? What'll happen to the things in our set? Is it for the greater good?
