Rationale for name
The term join is used in the standard theory of lattices, and partially ordered set, as the smallest element bigger than a give collection of elements. Join-closed thus suggests a property that is closed under taking joins. This is exactly what a join-closed subgroup property is, viewed in terms of the lattice of subgroups.
