Groupprops:Helping with external links

This is a small job that will help in cleaning up and improving the wiki. Your cooperation and assistance for this task is sought

The strength of Groupprops lies in its internal organization and structure, but Groupprops is far from being self-sufficient -- much of its power comes from the way it points to the relevant stuff in the outside world. High-quality external links in Groupprops would mean that you can use Groupprops as your tool of choice for searching the Web for group theory, rather than old-fashioned methods like Wikipedia.

External links is something where every person who uses Groupprops, regardless of his or her understanding or comfort with the overall structure and organization of the wiki, can help.

Find out other sources

If you are hunting for the meaning of a term, or reading a general survey article, it is unlikely that Groupprops will be the only source you are looking at -- you will probably be trying to mix and match it with many other sources. Here's what you can do.

If you cannot find anything and this seems inadequate

Note that some articles in Groupprops are marked with the Template:Wikilocal, viz it will be printed at the top of the article:

This term is nonstandard and is being used locally within the wiki. For its use outside the wiki, please define the term when using it.

For these articles, please do not expect to find information on the terms outside the wiki!

For any other article, if there are no external links, write:

right at the top of the page. Somebody else will notice this and try to either fit in appropriate external links or decide that after all, the term is local to the wiki.

If you can find something

If you stumble across some links which you think are notable or relevant, please add them in the External Links section at the bottom of the page. If you find some link about which you are not sure whether it is relevant or accurate, you can write about it in the talk page for the article (click on the link titled discussion at the top of the article's page).

Guidelines about the kind of pages you may stumble across are given below.

Encyclopaedia articles

If you find a Wikipedia article

If you find a Wikipedia article on the same topic, then throw in a section called External links in the Groupprops article (right at the end) and add a link to the Wikipedia article. For those of you who understand templates, you are supposed to use Template:Wp as described in Groupprops:External links. Otherwise just type in the URL for the Wikipedia page. Somebody else can come and templatify it.

If you find a Mathworld or Planetmath article

You can do something similar in case you find an article on Mathworld, Planetmath or Springer Online Reference -- put the link in the External Links section right at the bottom of the Groupprops article page.

If you hit on any other encyclopaedia whose content is not taken from Wikipedia (many encyclopaedias nowaadys simply mirror Wikipedia content), please add that as well.

If you find a survey or discussion article

Please feel free to add links to this as well, if you think that the discussion is related to, or throws additional light on, the subject matter of the article. Preferably, put this in a separate subsection, titled Discussion material under the External links section.
