Issai Schur (January 10, 1875 - January 10, 1941) was a mathematician who worked in Germany for most of his life (though he was of Russian origin).

Work
Group theory
Along with Frobenius (his advisor), Schur laid the foundations of linear representations of groups. His famous Schur's lemma is critical to the proof of the orthogonality relations for finite groups.
