Definition from first principles

Suppose K and L are fields. A function φ:K→L is termed a homomorphism of fields if φ satisfies the following three conditions:

  1. φ(1)=1
  2. φ(a+b)=φ(a)+φ(b)∀a,b∈K
  3. φ(ab)=φ(a)φ(b)∀a,b∈K
