Suppose we want to classify all groups &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;E&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; which arise as the [[group extension]] with normal subgroup &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;A&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; and quotient &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;G&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;. One approach to describing such a group &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;E&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; is to define a collection &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;S&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; of coset representatives for &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;A&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; in &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;E&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;. This can be viewed as a map from &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;G&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; to &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;E&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;. Call the coset representative for &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;g&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;b_g&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;. Define &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;f(g,h)&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; as the element of &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;A&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; given by &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;b_{gh}^{-1}b_gb_h&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt;.&lt;br /&gt;

It turns out that if we pick two different collections of coset representatives and let &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;f_1&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; and &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;f_2&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; be the functions corresponding to them, then &amp;lt;math&amp;gt;f_1 - f_2&amp;lt;/math&amp;gt; is a 2-coboundary.&lt;br /&gt;
